Wisdom Teeth Extraction: What You Should Expect

Jan 17, 2020

Wisdom teeth develop at around the age of 17 to 25. They are not necessary so not everybody who develops them. The teeth are usually spotted with the help of x-rays. You can keep them but sometimes they can cause trouble. That’s why most dentists recommend wisdom teeth removal. Most people don’t see the need for it but if they cause trouble you will regret why you didn’t do it earlier.

Why Remove Wisdom Teeth

A dentist in Ontario can recommend wisdom teeth removed due to some of the following reasons.

Impacted wisdom teeth

The wisdom teeth may be so far back in the mouth that they don’t come out as expected. They may also be trapped in your gums. When they are trapped, it causes a very painful experience.

Come in the Wrong Angle

Well, if the wisdom teeth come in against your molars you will have to take them out.

Small Mouth

Your mouth may not big enough to accommodate wisdom teeth. If your jaw doesn’t have enough space for extra molars it will be a problem if the wisdom teeth try to come in.

Cavities and Gum Disease

If you are suffering from gum disease or cavities, removing wisdom teeth will be in your best interest. You may not reach out to them during your daily oral cleaning.

What to Expect Before the Surgery

Before the surgery, talk to a dentist and during the appointment ensure to:

  • Discuss any health problems you may be having. For example, if you have High Blood Pressure.
  • Inform him about any drugs you take regularly.
  • Ask the dentist any questions you may be having.
  • Plan to have some time off after the surgery. For example, if you work, ask for sick leave.

What to Expect During the Surgery

The surgery will not take more than 50 minutes. During that time, expect to get sedated with anesthesia. The work of the anesthesia is to ensure the procedure is as painless as possible. The ones you can expect include:

Local Anesthesia

The dentist will numb you with local anesthesia such as lidocaine or novocaine. Alternatively, you may be asked to breathe laughing gas to help you relax during the procedure. Within a short time, you will be alert again.

IV Sedation

You will be injected some drugs through your veins to numb your mouth. These drugs will make you drowsy and you may sleep during the procedure.

General Anesthesia

General anesthesia is injected as well. You may also take it through breathing. This kind of sedation will make you sleep during the whole procedure. You may even continue sleeping even after an hour after the procedure.

Sometimes your dentist will cut the gum or even the bone to get to the teeth. You should not be worried though, the wounds will be stitched and will heal within the shortest time. Sometimes he may have to stuff pads in your mouth to ensure the blood in there is soaked.

What You Should Do After Surgery

Different people respond differently to the anesthesia used. Some wake up and within the next day and are ready for work. Others suffer some pain that lasts for up to three days. Follow the instructions given and within a few weeks, your mouth will have completely healed. For fast recovery, ensure to:

  • Use the cold compress method to help curb any swelling or color changes.
  • Sometimes use moist heat if your jaw gets sore.
  • Gently open and close your mouth to exercise the jaw.
  • Drink a lot of water and other fluids.
  • Start brushing your teeth after the first day. If there are any blood clots, don’t brush them off.
  • Take the drugs prescribed to you.
  • If the fever or swelling is too much, contact your doctor Asap.
  • Don’t eat hard foods that may scratch the wounds on your mouth.
  • Avoid smoking.
  • Avoid drinking using a straw.
