Dental Crowns and Caps

Back

Usually, a dental crown requires two appointments to be placed. During the first appointment at our dental clinic in Waterloo, your dentist will examine the tooth to determine the extent of your dental problems and if a crown can be supported. If a crown can be placed, the tooth will be carefully prepared to ensure a secure fit.

After the tooth is filed, an impression of your teeth will be taken to create the crown, and you will receive a temporary crown. This temporary crown protects the tooth while allowing you to get used to the sensation of your new crown. At your follow-up appointment, the permanent crown will be placed.

To ensure the perfect fit, the temporary crown will be removed and the permanent crown will be adjusted as necessary before being bonded to your tooth. Bonding it securely prevents it from coming loose or sliding off. Initially, your crown may feel strange, but it will eventually feel just like one of your own teeth.

Motives for Crown Installation

Your Waterloo dentist may recommend a dental crown for several reasons: to replace deteriorated or outdated fillings, shield teeth from fractures and breaks, affix partials and bridges, restore the appearance and functionality of teeth, conceal dental implants, or protect teeth following a root canal.

Porcelain Inlays & Onlays

Even if your teeth are strong, they can still sustain damage. Tooth decay (cavities) can occur if good oral hygiene habits, such as regular brushing and flossing, are not maintained. Additionally, trauma or stress may harm teeth. While a dental filling may effectively treat minor damage, serious decay or damage may require a crown. Sometimes, the damage lies in between; a filling won't suffice, but a crown would require more significant dental work. In such cases, a dental inlay or onlay could be the answer.

Both inlays and onlays are custom-made for each patient and are cemented to the damaged tooth or teeth. They effectively repair damage, restoring the tooth's original functionality and appearance.
