When you lose your permanent teeth you need to find a way to replace them because it would be affecting your appearance as well as your overall health. Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth and the surrounding tissues. If you prefer teeth replacements with dentures you can find two varieties available in the form of permanent and partial dentures.
Permanent dentures can be used when all your permanent teeth are missing and partial dentures are useful when you still have some natural teeth remaining. Permanent dentures can either be traditional or temporary. They can be made after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has begun to heal. A traditional denture will be ready for placement in the mouth in about 8 to 12 weeks after the teeth have been extracted. Temporary dentures, on the other hand, can be placed immediately after the extraction so you won’t have to walk around with gaps in your mouth.
Temporary dentures are made in advance and can be positioned immediately after the teeth and extracted. However, the bones and gums begin to shrink over time during the healing period following the extraction of the teeth. Therefore, they require more adjustments to fit properly during the healing process and must be considered only as a temporary solution until the permanent dentures are made.
Partial dentures are suggested when you have more than one natural teeth remaining in the upper or lower jaw. A fixed bridge will replace one or more teeth by placing crowns on the teeth on both sides of the space by attaching artificial teeth to them. The partial denture can fill spaces created by the missing teeth to prevent the other teeth from shifting out of position. A precision partial denture is a removable appliance that has internal attachments in place of clasps that attach to the neighboring crowns. It provides a natural-looking appearance to the wearer.
If you are not in favor of wearing dentures you can consider dental implants which can be used to support cemented bridges which will help to eliminate the need for a denture. The costs are certainly higher but implants and bridges closely resemble the feel of natural teeth. Dental implants are increasingly becoming an alternative to dentures but are not suitable for everyone.
The process of making new dentures will take a few weeks and several appointments to the dentist or prosthodontist who will determine the type of appliance best suited for your mouth. They will be making a series of impressions of your jaw and also take measurements of how your jaws relate to each other and the space between them.
Models will be created in the exact form and position of the denture to be developed. The models will help the dentist to assess the color, shape, and fit before the final denture is cast. You will be required to try the model several times during this process especially if you have requested custom dentures. The casting will only take place after you and the dentist are both satisfied with the cast and any adjustments needed will be made later on.
Dentures will be closely resembling your natural teeth and the change in your appearance is unlikely to be noticeable especially if you only need a set of upper dentures. However, you can rest assured that the dentures may even improve your smile and fill out your facial appearance.
The Ontario Dentist will instruct you on how long to wear the dentures and when to remove them. During the initial days after receiving the denture, you may be asked to leave them in your mouth all the time including when sleeping. This will be temporary and uncomfortable but is the easiest way to identify any problems on the dentures that need to be adjusted. After the adjustments have been made you should remove the dentures before going to bed. This is to allow the gum tissue to rest and permit normal stimulation and cleansing by the tongue and saliva. The denture can be replaced in the mouth in the morning.
If you have chosen dentures over other forms of teeth replacement options the Ontario dentist from Monarch dentistry will provide you all instructions on how to become accustomed to the new appliances in your mouth and the process of maintaining the dentures appropriately. You should soon get over any discomfort you may have with the dentures to begin enjoying your smile as you did before you lost your permanent teeth.
