Teeth Whitening Options for You

Aug 01 , 2021

Some events are such a big deal that you would want to show a beautiful smile. In some cases, your job would require you to have bright and white teeth. Marketers and models need to be presentable and have aesthetic smiles.
Your teeth might be discolored and you need to restore them to their natural color. In this case, teeth whitening would be a good option for you. If your big day is close, there are faster teeth whitening options for you. However, other options take time.

What Are Some of the Teeth Whitening Options?

There are several methods and products to whiten your teeth. There are three common whitening methods. They include:

  • Whitening by a dentist
  • Products dispensed by your dentist for administration at home
  • Products purchased over the counter or made at home without the oversight of your dentist

The choice of whitening is based on the following factors:

  • Type of discoloration you have
  • Mode of treatment
  • Your dental history
  • Your age especially if you are a child

Before trying any of the methods, consult with your dentist. Your dentist will recommend a treatment plan that matches your needs.

Whitening by a Dentist

Your dentist can use several methods to whiten your teeth, either in his or her office or your home.

Teeth Bleaching

Generally, your dentist will use carbamide peroxide to bleach your teeth. The compound breaks into urea and hydrogen peroxide to remove the discoloration. Dentists consider it to be a safe procedure to whiten your teeth.

Zoom Teeth Whitening

This is one of the fastest options for whitening your teeth. Once your dentist has decided that zoom teeth whitening is the best option for you, he or she will recommend cleaning first.
After the cleaning, your dentist will prepare your lips and gums to avoid damage by zoom light. The dentist will then apply hydrogen peroxide on your teeth. Next, the dentist will apply the special light on the teeth for 15 minutes. During this time, the white light together with the hydrogen peroxide gel mixes and penetrates your enamels, breaking the stains.
The entire procedure takes up to an hour and is completed in your dentist’s office. The dentist will also provide you with a home kit that will ensure your teeth are touched up for a certain period.

At-Home Teeth Whitening Options and Products

You can purchase over-the-counter products to whiten your teeth. Unlike products that your dentist uses, these products do not have carbamide peroxide. If you have extreme staining or discoloration, these products might not be reliable. Before choosing a product or home-based options, you can discuss the best options with your dentist.
Some of the products include:
Whitening Toothpaste
Whitening toothpaste does not contain carbamide peroxide. Therefore, they target the surfaces of your tooth. They contain abrasives and blue covarine instead. This toothpaste might not show its effects immediately. However, if they contain covarine, they will show results faster.
Teeth Whitening Strips
Over-the-counter strips contain less hydrogen peroxide than the dentist’s treatments. You will apply the strips once or twice a day over a period, as indicated by the manufacturer. Several whitening strip products are available in different concentrations.
Activated Charcoal
Activated charcoal is a homemade teeth whitening product. This product is not scientifically proven. Therefore, you should discuss it with your dentist before pursuing it.

Keeping Your Teeth White after a Whitening Procedure

It is important to make your perfect smile last. For maximum results, a dentist in Ontario recommends that you do the following:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice daily
  • To remove plaque between your teeth, floss gently and thoroughly at least once in a day
  • Rinse your mouth at least once in a day using an antiseptic mouthwash
  • Use whitening toothpaste once in a week
  • Visit your dentist regularly

To achieve the best results you can avoid consuming foods such as:

  • Tea and coffee since they can stain your teeth
  • Dark-colored sauces
  • Acidic foods such as oranges and lemons
  • Fruit juice

For white teeth, you can consume foods such as white-colored vegetables, white meat, colorless beverages, and non-acidic fruits.
